Tripod Adapter for DJI Osmo Action
A custom 3D-printed adapter joining a legacy action camera's shock case to a tripod, refined over two prototypes.
Context
I was given a DJI Osmo Action camera as a gift and wanted to use it for content creation.
Problem
The camera is a legacy model, and models before the third generation are no longer commercially supported. I couldn't find an adapter that worked with both the camera's shock case and my tripod.
Approach
I measured the shock case and the tripod to find the dimensions needed for a secure attachment to both. For prototyping, I kept the geometry in my initial CAD simple.
The first prototype showed that the tolerance was too tight for my nozzle size and that the hardware didn't fit well. The notch for the camera's rotation also wasn't deep enough to hold the camera perpendicular. I accounted for all of this in the second prototype.
Result
Future improvement
The second prototype fully achieves my goal of a working adapter that fits the hardware. I think I can make the design more compact while increasing its strength and adjustability, but I want to do more testing before a third iteration.
